Things are progressing at a very rapid rate than one could even imagine. For instance, we are living in another country or state, far from our loved ones either to work or to pursue our studies. We miss them at some point and wish they were here with us.

Well, these days technological advancements have evolved to an extent that you can see and stay connected with your loved ones virtually through video calling apps like FaceTime, WhatsApp Video calls, Hangouts, True talk etc. If we are not able to make any video calls, an instant message on the chat is enough to quickly convey our message within fractions of seconds. Shopping has also adapted to the virtual platform, especially after the pandemic has come to rest, and there are a lot of platforms like Myntra, Amazon, Meesho, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Big Basket etc., to carry out our shopping tasks.

In fact, even the need to go the pharmacy to buy medicines has reduced greatly since there a lot of websites and apps that allow you to place your orders online and you can have them delivered right to your doorstep! Despite the advancements and the numerous benefits that the evolution of technology has brought about, there are still a lot of precious factors that are being lost and the sad reality is that most of us do not get to notice it.

One such precious factor is our health. A saying which states that “sometimes if you need to achieve something, you need to lose something,” has turned out to be one hundred percent true in this case. Yes, although there are a lot of advancements in technology and it has been beneficial to many people, most of us often forget the fact that the benefits and the advantages are being experienced at the cost of our health.

Yes, technology has proven itself to be positive under many aspects and in various fields but with respect to the health aspect amongst humans, it has shown a lot of negative impacts. In fact, the consequences are so intense that the effects and the changes that occur as a consequence are drastically dangerous. Sometimes, the consequences can be so intense that the effects penetrate deep into the human body, causing complications and worsening the pre-existing problems in the body. Technology has indeed caused a big boom in the routine lives of people. The changes have occurred to such an extent that one would not even have the slightest idea of the kind of life that was led by people before technology evolved, or even have a glimpse of the amazing experiences that they had when the advancements in technology were not as much as it is today.

For instance, there were times where children would play outside especially during the evening hours after they get back from school and also during weekends and other holidays. If the children of today’s generation are compared to the children who grew up in the pre-technological era, the differences will occupy a long list. The most primary one out of them all is that we hardly get to see any kids today who come out to play outdoor games and if at all any of them show up by chance, they are all having gadgets in latched to their hands like a secondary extension. Apart from this, the kids of today are not so smart and knowledgeable compared to kids who were least exposed to technology.

For instance, if you asked a least exposed kid for the shortest and fastest route to reach a place, then he/she will definitely tell you about the best possible route within the reach of his/her knowledge without the use of any gadgets or even GPS. However, if the same question was asked to a technology-obsessed kid, the first thing that he/she would do is to open Google Maps on the mobile device, or any other map application present therein and then tell you the route to the destination. So, this is the difference; the upcoming generation is a lot more technology reliant.

They are trapped into a form of infatuation due to which the obsession and the addiction that they have towards gadgets is very difficult for them to let go. They are blindfolded by a misconception that gadgets are the ideal relievers in their times of dismay, depression, and stress.

This as a result, has brought about isolation due to which they do not interact with the people around them and that includes their family members too. Due to this, they fail to create bonds with people, even if it is just something that is as simple as a formal friendship. This does not apply to the kids alone but also to us adults who have fallen into the traps of the technological advancements and find it a huge challenge to get ourselves off its clutches. When we ourselves as grown-up adults are unable to free ourselves from these chaotic clutches then how is it fair from our end to expect our children to come out of it? We should preach what we do, even if it is something small.

When we ourselves are so engaged with the virtual people and the virtual world and yet have no time for the people who are physically around us, then how can we expect our children to come over and spend some time with family and friends and have some interactive conversations? Does this sound fair in any way? The answer is NO! Not at all. So, in order to retain healthy relationships as well as a healthy body, it is mandatory for all of us, and not just our children to practice self-control. One way to accomplish this is to start with setting up small boundaries, maybe a cutdown of let’s say 10 mins of screen time.

You can probably follow this for a week and then as time progresses, you can increase it by adding 5 minutes. You can spend those few minutes in probably having a conversation with the people around you; it could be as simple as asking them how they are doing or how have things been with them or how did their day go! It does not necessarily have to be a long or serious conversation. As long as it keeps you away from your gadgets, then definitely go for it. Another alternative that you can adhere to is utilizing the time in probably reading something like novels or magazines or even engaging in some healthy practices like meditation.

So, if you are confined to your gadgets, then that is the only option that you have to stick to, but if you get yourself off from its clutches, there are multiple options to explore, in that if you do not like doing something, you have full freedom to switch to the other, unlike the case with gadgets where your screen time only revolves around the amount of time that you use to spend on various apps in it. So, whenever possible, if not always, try to avoid the use of electronics to the maximum to have a healthier life, after all Health is Wealth! Now having looked at the health factors in relation to technological advancements, let us now have a look at some of the most serious consequences that technology has on human health and how it affects our lifestyle.

Sleep cycle is disturbed

One of the most quick and noticeable impacts or consequences that use of gadgets has on our health is the disturbance that is caused in our sleep cycle. Our sleep cycle is disturbed to such an extent that it affects our everyday activities and as a result, our concentration as well as our memory powers are the most affected.

Not having proper sleep automatically leads to stress which affects our concentration when doing some work as well as our memory power eventually deteriorates, due to which we slowly start to forget things, like for instance, let us say that you kept some money in your wallet and after that you did not even think about it since you know that you have kept it in a safe place. Suddenly, you need that money to pay for something and you are not able to recall where you kept it. This is an effect of insufficient sleep.

Mental health is utterly disturbed

As mentioned earlier, usage of gadgets greatly affects your mental health and leads to isolation, depression, anxiety, and a lot more. Some children are affected when they are in their mother’s womb and are often born with disorders like autism, dyslexia etc. Why does all this happen, well it is due to excessive isolation. At times, the consequences can be so intense in that people end up going to extreme levels like suicide attempts.

Radiation affects the eyes

The radiation that is emitted from these gadgets are one of the main reasons why people have glasses at a very young age!

Reduced Physical activities.

Reduced physical activities due to obsession with technology leads to a lot of body complications like obesity, chances of acquiring type 2 diabetes, laziness, and a lot more.

There is nothing that is more important as our health in this world. There is no wealth that is valued as high as our health and hence health is wealth!
