In this essay we are going to talk about the Hindi. Hindi is among the topmost spoken languages on the planet; to be precise it is the third most spoken language. It is an ideal Aryan language spoken majorly in India; it is also spoken in neighboring countries like Nepal and Fiji. In Fiji Hindi is even an official language, the Hindi spoken in Fiji has some influence of dialects such as Awadhi and Bhojpuri and is known as Hindustani but the constitution of Fiji refers to it as the Fiji Hindi.

Hindi is one of the two official languages of India; the other official language of India is English. Hindi is spoken as the first language by almost 425 million people in India and almost 120 million people as their second language. Hindi is written in the Devanagari script which is a left-to-right script derived from the ancient Brahmi script of the subcontinent. The word Hindi comes from the Persian word “Hindi” which meant people belonging to India.

It is believed that Hindi has been derived from the Vedic Sanskrit like all other indo aryan languages around the 7th century. Though Hindi has some characteristic differences that make it different and unique from the rest of the indo Aryan languages. The modern standardized Hindi is even more Sanskritised and is popularly known as the manak Hindi. After the formation of modern Hindi or manak Hindi and with the arrival of mass communication like radio and television at the same time, a boost in the number of modern Hindi speakers was seen and today majority of the Hindi speakers speak modern or Manak Hindi.

A big contribution to this was the mass media and literature. Speaking of literature, Hindi literature is divided into four types basically are the bhakti, the Sringar, the vigatha, and the modern or adhunik most of the literature written after 18 century comes under modern or adhunik literature, adhunik literature is written in Manak Hindi.

There are many dialects of Hindi like Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Bundeli, Chhattisgarhi, Maithili, Rajasthani, Gujarati, and many others which are spoken in different states of the subcontinent. These dialects are derived from Hindi and have been modified by the locals to create a new dialect. Hindi is spoken mainly in northern India and in southern India mainly south Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam are preferred along with English.

After the colonial period, the schools started giving education mostly in English which resulted in a fake belief that knowing English is something superior and makes you intelligent and people throughout the subcontinent started to believe in this false notion and started to learn English forgetting that in the end, it is just a language and not a measure of one’s intelligence and education.

Despite the turbulence and changes that the Hindi language saw over the centuries, almost every Indian is very proud of their mother tongue and first language. India is a very culturally diverse and rich country with innumerable dialects and languages and where every dialect and language is accepted and respected by everyone. But Hindi is the one language that connects every Indian as one. It is the language that unites the diverse cultures of India, no matter from what part of the subcontinent you belong to what dialect or language you speak, Hindi unites you.

To celebrate this every year on 14 September Hindi diwas is celebrated all over the subcontinent. It is done because on 14 September 1949 Hindi was accepted as the national language of India.
