Short Essay on Life in a big city

Just like a typical youth finding a better place for themselves, I too hoped to have a better life in the city. But it isn’t that easy. The perception of city life as the best life broke the moment I faced the struggles. However, I still don’t regret coming to the city because it gave me better opportunities to learn. The struggles made me grow better.

How is living in a big city different from small villages and towns?

Living in big cities is a lot different than living in small villages and towns. Anyone who has experienced living in both spaces will probably tell you the same. Though living in villages and towns has its own struggle to care about, living in a big city isn’t as easy either. Let’s look into some of the points that make a big city so different from small-town and villages-

A lot of opportunities

The major reason for people coming to the already overcrowded cities is the number of opportunities a person can have here. There are many jobs here that a person can choose from with a higher pay. There are more and better colleges to study here. Hoping to grab on these opportunities, many young people and students come to cities to find and make their place here.

A lot of facilities

The major disadvantage that a smaller village or town holds over big cities is the number of facilities provided in that place. Big cities have all the facilities that one can think of. There are many places to visit which might not be found in the small towns and villages. Seeing such facilities and luxuries, people from small towns and villages often tend to dream of living in the city.

Super busy lives

One notion that almost everyone has when they think about big cities like Mumbai is that the city never sleeps. In a way, it is true. The City is continuously working day and night. The people are so involved with their work and tasks that they hardly even manage time for themselves.

The situation of this super fast and busy life is not something that you will see if you visit or live in a small town or village. The routine of work here is totally different from the city. There is no such rushy feeling.

Maybe that’s why many people from the city feel very relaxed and calm when they visit small towns and villages. On the other hand, seeing the running and busy lifestyle of a big city might scare a person who came from a small town or place.

Few to no close bonds

One thing about living in big cities is that almost everyone, especially an adult who has stayed in a small town or village all their lives and recently shifted to the city, would not feel a sense of belonging here. It may feel as if they have stepped into a different world. Everyone would be a stranger to them. In such situations, only those who are well with coping and adjusting may somehow find a way to live. But those who were completely oblivious of this side and are not able to cope with it might ultimately lose their interest in living in the city.

With India’s development on the run, people are just getting busier and busier. They hardly have time for themselves and their close ones. Don’t be surprised if two neighbours who live beside each other in the city don’t even know about each other! Nobody has time to sit and chat their time away!

The street maze

I still remember the time I visited Mumbai for the very first time. If I didn’t have my cousin with me at that time, I would have definitely lost my way home! The streets of the city were nothing less than a maze for me. Though over time, I did become acquainted with it, I still roam around quite carefully so that I won’t lose my way.

A chance of Personal growth

It’s not just opportunities and facilities that made me intrigued with the idea of living in a city. Rather, it was the chance to learn and be independent! Living in such big cities gives us a reality check of how difficult living can be, especially if you are alone without much support.

We come across so many difficulties and situations. We may keep getting tangled in problems but all of these will help us improve personally. With every problem that we sort out, we become more mature. With every situation we tackle we learn something new for the future. It grows us in terms of personality and makes us strong and hard-headed.

The confidence

Whenever I compare the children of big cities and children of small towns and villages, I often feel that the surge of confidence that city kids possess is not something very common in town and village kids. If I imagine a situation where two kids are put in a room together, there is a very high probability of the city kid overshadowing the village one.

This is due to the kind of education and range of activities provided to a city kid. Resources in small towns and villages are very limited so a child’s world remains stuck in those limitations, on the other hand, this might not be the case with a child brought up in a city who is very much aware of the resources it holds and the fast and progressive way in which it works. They naturally tend to develop quick and smart thinking to cope up with their surroundings. This coping up ultimately evokes a sense of confidence in them which may not be seen in a village or small-town kid.

Tiny houses

If you are someone who has lived all your life in spacious houses, living in tiny ones may seem a bit odd and suffocating. That is why it is often seen that elders from the village who come to visit their children or relatives in big cities often find themselves becoming dumbfounded at the size of the houses. These big buildings with small rooms are something unimaginable to them.

Street smart

While living in a city, one has to be street smart and how would that happen? With experience! If you are not aware of the difficulties and the way things work here, you may find it really hard to survive. Everything may scare you and make you nervous. It becomes quite easy for such people to become pushovers. Hence, it is important for them to look into the way the city works and adapt themselves according to it.

Where is living better? In a big city or a small town?

Well, people have their own preferences. Some wish to live in a city while some prefer small towns and villages. The choices even differ according to situations. Every year, many people leave their towns and villages and move to big cities with the hope to find a better job and life for themselves and their families. On the other hand, many people wish to go back to their hometowns and villages to settle down after earning enough. Many young men and women see these big cities as a place where their dreams will be appreciated.

So when it comes to living, the choices may vary.

Both the places have their own share of advantages and disadvantages. Big cities may have tonnes of facilities and opportunities but they may not have the serenity and calmness. Villages, on the other hand, may have that calm life but they may lack opportunities and resources. Overall, living in a place ultimately depends on what basis you want to live on. If you are someone whose lifestyle can be adjusted and well suited to city life, if you are someone who wants to learn and make use of abundant resources, then living in a city may work well with you. But if you find yourself getting lost in the city and its rushy speed then maybe that’s not the life for you until you forcefully adjust yourself into it.

Conclusion

What does living in a big city feel like? To be honest, it is a mixture of good and bad for me. I have a lot of opportunities and facilities here but the rushy and never sleeping nights scare me. A person living here has to push themselves a lot to go through each day. They have to be smart and aware enough to move with the crowd or else they will be left behind.

All of this does make it difficult for one to live in the city, but, these difficulties help them to grow too. They make you more determined and strong-headed. Everyone has their own journey here which later becomes an unforgettable story.
