Although, in present times, marriage is considered to be a legal contract as well. Nevertheless, the definition of marriage varies from person to person. More importantly, every ethnic group, cultural diversity and religious group have their own meaning, belief and faith for marriage. In some religious groups, marriages are considered to be compulsory before any sexual activity. For some people, marriage is an important emotional bond.

Legal rules are ought to be there in marriages as states now recognise marriage as a legal contract but there are certain pre-determined bonds as well for marriage which are widely socially accepted. Marriage originated from the ancient times considering the benefits of both of the sides. There are many economic considerations and so-called economic advantages of marriage too. Dowry system and bride price system are two of them. Modern times has influenced the meaning of marriage these days. Bride price as a system has almost disappeared in most of the countries. Although dowry system still remains to be common in some parts of the country.

Different Types Of Marriages

There are different types of marriages evolved from different cultures, customs and religions. Some of them are discussed below-

Monogamy

Monogamy is a type of marriage where the person is supposed marry one person at a time and spend the rest of the life with that person. In some countries, monogamy is the only considered type of marriage, other types of marriages might be illegal in those countries. Some countries do not even consider second marriage.

Polygamy

Polygamy is a type of marriage where more than two spouses involved. It can also be termed as group marriage.  polygamy can further be divided into two categories that is

°Polygyny- In this type of marriage, a man is married to several woman. It is the most accepted form of polygamy. It is mostly witnessed in African and Asian countries. It can be seen in India as well. Some scholars suggest that the origination of polygyny happened due to the sex ratio of male and female. Somewhere the sex trade has also affected this.

°Polyandry- Polyandry is a type of marriage where the wife marries two or more husbands. We have witnessed polyandry in our folklores too. We can take ‘Draupadi’ from Mahabharata as example. She was married to five brothers, the Pandavas. It is one of best examples of polyandry. Although, polyandry is not that much common these days.

Child Marriage

Child marriages are a type of marriage where generally both of the spouses are under the age of 18. Basically, this type of marriage involves partners who are not adults. Child marriage had been very common in our ancient times. Although most of the countries do not consider child marriages legal as of now. Child marriages also has given birth to the concept of birth kidnapping. Though, both male and female are children in this kinds of marriages but it has been seen the generally the girls are under age or younger. This has created the issues related to teenage pregnancy. These girls are becoming the victims of domestic violence. Child marriages are still being witnessed around south African countries and Asian countries.

We cannot always concentrate on love. Marriage is about compatibility and commitments too. We generally forget to plan our life after the marriage. But that is the most crucial step. Family planning is one of the most crucial steps to marriage.  The question is about kids. As the thought process has been changing every day, the idea of having kids has changed too. Earlier, getting married and then having kids were one of the major traditions but ideas have been changed lately. Many people prefer not having kids these days and sometimes just settling for one. Surprisingly the idea of adoption and surrogacy has also come up.

Another question regarding family planning to the male partners should be about the reaction and the process they would follow if their significant one faces issues getting pregnant. Women struggling to get pregnant is being a controversial issue now-a-days. Same goes with miscarriages.

Other than planning kids, it is necessary to have a talk on raising them because parenting them in a good direction is a herculean task. Having cold arguments over this topic is quite natural.

Marriage has been an extremely important affair in our country. Nevertheless, marriage is a legal union of two individuals, it has always been a symbol of culture and tradition. But marriage is not just a mere legal or cultural affair, it is a commitment of forever and a day. Such commitment has to be an auspicious one and to have a healthy and prosperous married life, choosing the right partner is one of the most prime elements. People fall in love and plan to settle down but love is not enough to make a happy home. One might ignore the very ordinary things to discuss before the marriage which may lead to huge differences later.

Although it is completely fine to disagree on certain topics as we do not have to become a carbon copy of our partner. But it is much better to know the differences before we tie the knot. Surprisingly, only one out of hundred couples end up getting divorced in India. Divorce is an ugly side of a marriage and to reduce the chances of such a heartache, transparency and communication is the key.
