I hail from the North East of India. The north eastern states of India are known as the seven sisters of India. I am from Assam. My hometown is called Tezpur. It is a small town in central Assam. And for me, it is the prettiest town. Well, many may disagree with this but as I had mentioned before, one’s hometown is always special for them. it falls under the district of Sonitpur. It is the largest of the north bank cities. It is barely 200 kms away from Guwahati. And it is the fifth largest city of Assam. This is well connected town and shares borders with Arunachal Pradesh. Tezpur is known for its historical heritage.

It has one of the oldest and finest collections of sculptural art. The town is majorly known for its tea plantations. It is near to one of the nicest and biggest national parks of India- that is the Kaziranga national park. It is one of the oldest cities of Assam. And it is also called the cultural capital of Assam. I have spent more than 15years of my life in this town before shifting for higher studies. And I have numerous memories in this city. Tezpur is known for its cleanliness and peaceful environment. The environment of Tezpur is what I miss the most. The place was adequately developed and under developed at the same time. One could hear birds chirping and noisy traffic at the same time. The place had well maintained buildings as well as greenery all over. The beauty of Tezpur was picturesque. One would never want to leave Tezpur if he had understood the beauty of Tezpur. May be that is the reason Tezpur sees many migrators every day.

My place in Tezpur was surrounded by luscious green trees. I could see beautiful sunsets every day from my terrace. Everyday I would wake up to birds chirping. As I have already shared that Tezpur is bank city, we had pretty ghats which surrounded the whole city. One of the ghats was just one kilometre away from my place. We would cycle to that ghat occasionally. The prettiest part about Brahmaputra is the river dolphins. We would occasionally witness those as well.

The climate of my town is another attractive factor of my town. It is neither too cold nor too hot. Assam suffers floods almost every day but as Tezpur is a hilly region, it does not even suffer from floods. The maximum temperature goes up to 34 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature in winters goes as down as 12 degrees Celsius.

The name of the town, Tezpur, has a historical story related to it too. ‘tezpur’ literally means ‘the city of blood’. Sounds astonishing, right? It is based on the romantic epic of Usha and Aniruddha. The epic revolves around the king, Banasura, the great Asura king of the ancient Tezpur. King Banasura had a beautiful daughter named as Usha. Usha had a best friend who was known to have artistic skills and magical powers. That best friend was named as Chitralekha. It is said that Usha once saw a prince in her dreams and fell in love with that prince. Next morning, she described everything to Chitralekha. Chitralekha, with the help of the description given by Usha, made a painting of Usha’s dream boy.

As chitra lekha had magical powers, she even identified the boy. The boy happened to be the grandson of Dwarka’s king Shri Krishna. Chitralekha with the help of her magical powers, she helped the two to meet, fall in love and get married as per the Gandharva rites. But all this was done without the knowledge of the king and the father Banasura. When Banasura got to know all this, he lost his temper completely and jailed Anirudha. When shri Krishna learnt this, he arrived as soon as possible to the lands of ancient Tezpur. Angry Banasura and king shri Krishna had a bloody fight. As a result of that, the land saw bloody streams of human blood. And the place was named after this incident.
