Short Essay On Poverty in India

In this essay we are going to talk about the Poverty in India. Poverty is something that we normally refer to as a state or condition where an individual or a group of individuals fail to satisfy their basic needs. A lot of us look at poverty as something that is not really a good thing; of course, it is not something that any of us would like to be a part of but unfortunately, in today’s world that comprises billions and billions of people, poverty is one key thing that still exists all over the world.

Short Essay On Poverty in India

There are several reasons to why there is poverty in a particular area, in a particular country, or even amongst a group of people or a society. Looking through the perspectives of many, the reasons yield out to be a large number indeed. Apart from the condition itself, poverty has also brought about a lot of consequences along side and the consequences are not as easy or rather, they are not as simple as they seem. There are quite a lot of consequences however, the ones who are undergoing those consequences are the only ones who will know what kind of pain, what kind of challenges and what kind of difficulties that they are going through.

Some of the consequences include loss of good health, depression, other mental illnesses, suicidal thoughts, loss of peace in life, numerous struggles which are mostly back-to-back and a lot more! Most of the consequences are based on psychological factors; they may seem like they are no big deal, but the people struggling with these factors are the only ones who know the actual intensity of their condition, the depth of the pain that it brings about and all the other consequences that go hand-in-hand.

The most important and precious thing that poverty takes away from people is their health. After all, health is the biggest form of wealth, if there is no good health that is retained during the course of our lifetime, then every single thing on earth would definitely be impossible! Due to poverty, people can’t afford the proper kind of food to maintain good health or even to enhance their health conditions, so the logic here is quite simple! As health deteriorates, then everything else starts to collapse one after the other. Sometimes, poverty has also been proven to be the reason behind deaths of people. Although, some die due to poor health and other form of resulting sicknesses, most of them die because of suicide.

Essay On Poverty

Although it is against the law to commit suicide, the condition of poverty is powerful enough to push an individual or sometimes even a group of people to such an extent that they end their lives for good through suicide. The reasons to this again, could be anything; it could be due to debts, bankruptcy, failure to repay loan, family, or even societal pressure. It would not be fair at all to blame the victims alone because they are not solely responsible for opting to such extreme acts like suicide! It is equally important to also investigate the other side of the situation, analyze well and then conclude. So, let’s look at some of the main reasons to poverty a little more in detail.

Poor education

We all know that education is key to knowledge. Yes, without a doubt, we live in a world where we don’t really require an individual to complete his/her degree to qualify for a job since what matters is the skill than the theoretical aspects that they had studied during their education. However, education here is not being referred to completion of higher secondary school and college degrees alone; the amount of practical knowledge that one possesses based on what he/she has studied is indeed a crucial factor that any recruiter would consider prior to hiring that individual. So, lack of education, especially those who have no knowledge about anything at all, is one of the main reasons why poverty still exists today. Due to this, they often end up doing some sort of odd jobs that just pay a very small amount in the form of wages or tips to make a living or to even make ends meet!

Discrimination

There have been a lot of movements, initiatives have been taken and even a lot of protests in some countries have occurred, to stop racism and discrimination. Although some countries have imposed strict laws and even made it a punishable offense, there are still a lot of places where racism and discrimination are still being practiced. This is also another main reason to the existence of poverty. One of the root causes here, if investigated a little bit of depth is that people are judgmental.

They often end up bringing in their own stereotypes regarding poor people, or even with regards to people hailing from a different caste, religion and sometimes it can go to an extent as worse as gender discrimination. People often forget the fact that talents don’t come to people based on their status, caste, religion, race, nationality or even gender. There are a lot of hidden talents that still exist today but many fail to show up only because of discrimination. It is wrong to take away their rights to shine and develop! Since their talents are not showcased, they are not able to be successful and are often forced to continue living their lives in poverty. Development and growth should be equal to everyone.

No Governmental Support

One of the most crucial factors that need to be investigated is the Government’s contribution. Due to corruption and dirty politics that are played around the public, many of the people who are denied their rights and have nowhere to go suffer till date. It is the responsibility of the Government to serve its people and do the needful to ensure that at least every household has its basic needs that are required to run their day-to-day lives! There are a lot of issues happening that are left unaddressed by the Government.

It should be the duty of the Government to make sure that people who are underprivileged and are have an annual household income that is below the average level should be favored in some way or the other, either through provision of basic needs to people who have absolutely no income or income below average, give preference to people with talents even if they are poor and make sure that they are no beggars on the road, by giving them some kind of odd jobs to do. Let’s take a simple example to better understand how beneficial this initiative can be.

There are a lot of people begging on roads and most of them are homeless. Although the very first impression that we get upon seeing such people is sympathy towards them. However, this is being misused. There are a lot of people who do this on purpose and not out of their fate, just because they are too lazy to go out and earn! So, if the Government takes an initiative to put an end to this, then there is hope of not having any homeless people dawdling around in the streets, and traffic signals too! This not only reduces poverty to a good extent, but it also contributes to further development as well as betterment of the country!

The Individual’s own activities

Sometimes, when an individual is under the condition of severe poverty, it is a result of his own activities. Let’s say for instance, a person is into gambling. This is one of the easiest ways to lose money. Additionally, it is highly addictive. So he keeps gambling and at a point he might feel good when he sees that he is able to earn a lot of money through this, but he often forgets that even the opposite can happen. When he finally encounters the opposite, he loses money, and he keeps losing over and over and this eventually leads to frustration. What could even be worse is that if he has a family, then they will have to face the consequences for a mistake that they are not even responsible for!

Eventually, out of depression and frustration, the individual slowly starts to fall apart, he eventually loses his confidence and even the prompt to go look for a new job and start over again slowly fades away. As this happens, poverty slowly takes form. It comes and anchors to the roots of his life in such a way that he wouldn’t have a night of peaceful sleep, there wouldn’t be peace in his house, he wouldn’t be on good terms with himself or even his family, if at all he has any. So, this is the kind of chaos that a person’s own activities can cause in his life and bring about poverty. Yes, of course, there is hope that this can change if they are willing to take the effort for the better but if the person’s old habits are consistent, then it is not going to be easy ahead and neither are things going to heal anytime soon!

Increased Unemployment

Increased rate of unemployment is also another reason to poverty. The Government alone is not to blame. But even private companies which are successful and highly reputed are responsible for this. It is not just discrimination, but nepotism is also one of the key reasons to why there is still poverty. If these are avoided, then there is hope that poverty will also eventually reduce and hopefully come to an end some day!
