Deaths and injuries caused by road accidents in India varies according to age, gender, month and time. The most vulnerable population age group is 30-59. According to the reports, males face higher level of fatalities and injuries than their females. Extreme weather also cause bad road accidents and most of the accidents happen during working hours. Analysis of road accident scenario shows that there is a huge variation in fatality risk across states and cities.

Road accidents take more place in union territories compared to all India average. But burden of road accidents in India is somewhat lower in metropolitan cities. In every country road safety situation is generally improving. But India faces a worsening situation. There are no increased efforts and new initiatives, the report shows that total number of road traffic deaths in India is likely to cross the mark of 250,000 by the year 2025. But these accidents and deaths can be decreased if appropriate action is taken.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari said there could be a saving of Rs 90 lakh per person by preventing deaths and reducing injuries to minor ones in such incidents. He also stated that the accident was a tremendous burden to society and the nation. A report was also released by the World Bank on ‘Traffic Crash Injuries And Disabilities: The Burden on India Society’, prepared in association with Save Life Foundation, Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs.

India has shown the highest number of road accidents globally. About 1.5 lakh people are killed and more than 4.5 lakh crippled annually in 4.5 lakh road accidents. It also caused a loss of 3.14 percent to the GDP.

Each life is precious whether it is from a poor or rich family, urban or rural area, male or female. Road accidents have caused more deaths compared to COVID-19.

Many people just die because of lack of healthcare too. Some people are not able to afford the treatment which causes the death, sometimes ambulances are late due to high traffic which also causes the death. So there are many aspects that contribute to death and life long cripples caused by a road accident.

Changes in law and special policies should be made to prevent road accidents, as they cost a tremendous burden to society and nation. There are many loopholes in the legal system, police system.

According to some reports around 70 percent of deaths are in the working-age group of 18 to 45 years old and India accounts for 415 deaths per day due to road accidents.

Road safety audits, construction of proper roads, speed limits and awareness should be made to decrease the number of accidents. The Ministry has taken several steps for preventing accidents. They have said that IITs and engineering colleges could take up highway stretches for road safety audit with some financial aid while third-party road safety audits will help in finding engineering faults and correcting them. Proper road safety council should be there for collecting accident data and suggesting measures to further reduce road accidents.

Experts say that the main causes of road accidents in India are rapid urbanisation, poor safety, lack of enforcement, distracted drivers, influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding and a failure to wear seat-belts or helmets.

Nitin Gadkari also said the government has pledged to reduce 50% accidents in the next five years, and India is a signatory to this at the World Safety Conference held in Sweden recently. Government also has proposed to open 1,000 driving schools in the country to spread awareness and to teach proper skills for using vehicles.

Main Causes For Road Accidents

1. Drunk Driving

One of the main reasons that contribute to so many road accidents is drunk driving. Most of the people are seen drinking after having a long day with their friends. Sometimes they think that they can drive perfectly after drinking. They doubt the traffic rule “Don’t Drink and Drive”. It is very irresponsible to drive after drinking.

Drunk driving is most common in youngsters. They think that it’s cool to go on a night out, drink the whole night and drive like crazy. But sometimes you are not able to handle yourselves which causes road accidents. The person who is driving not only risks their own life, but the people sitting in the car and other people on the road too. It is a serious crime to drink and drive. It’s not that you shouldn’t drink and enjoy yourselves but always drink responsibly and call a cab for yourself. You may not be caught by the traffic police but you can loose balance and your life too. So for your own safety and others too don’t drink and drive.

2. Overspeeding

Another common reason for road accidents is over speeding. Sometimes you do it for fun, sometimes you are late for work. But over speeding is very dangerous and causes so many accidents every year. It is the primary cause of accidents, especially on highways.

You should not overspeed no matter what. What if you will reach your work 10 mins late, it is better than never reaching. There are many consequences of overspeeding. What if you lose your control while overspeeding? What if you bump into someone. It will cause damage to other people too. You should also prevent switching from lane to lane and driving past other cars at a fast pace.

Don’t be aggressive on the road. Take your time, drive carefully and you will reach your destination.

3. Poor Road Lighting

As the night sets in, the number of road accidents that can happen also increases. And it is also seen that in the night most of the road accidents happen. Street lights play an important role on both roads and highways in preventing accidents. It helps you to see properly and drive carefully.

But many areas do not have sufficient street lights which causes so many road accidents. So people who drive at night should be very careful as the road visibility is very low as compared to the day. If there are not any street lights you should turn on your car lights on full. It will not only help you and other people too.

People should be more careful on highways as cars are speeding usually and lack of light can cause accidents.

4. Lack of attention

Sometimes you are not focuses on the driving and the surroundings which is a cause for road accidents. You may feel efficient while multitasking but it is very dangerous. Many people are found texting or calling while driving which is a very irresponsible thing to do.

You are putting yourself and other people at risk too. You should always focus on the road and driving carefully. You can reply and call after reaching your destination. If it’s so urgent you can use a bluetooth headset but your both hands should be on the wheel.

5. Crossing Red Light

Red lights are used to lower the traffic and help in driving safely. You should not cross the red light. Red lights are meant for you to stop, not for you to run away. It is a violation too. You don’t know what if the other person comes ahead of you out of nowhere. So you should always follow the rules.

Preventing Road Accidents

Accident Prevention includes the plans, preparations, and actions taken to avoid accidents or stop them from taking place. It can help save lives, escape from injury, lessen the degrees of injury, avoid damage to property, reduce treatment and compensation costs, and prevent the loss of productive time and morale.

Some things that can be done are-

1. Giving full attention

2. Having proper knowledge

3. Having proper driving training

4. Always put on helmets, seat belts and other safety equipment before driving.

5. Do not drink and drive. 

6. Never use mobile phones or ear phones while driving.

7. Know the traffic signs, signals, lights and traffic safety rules before you hit the road.

8. Do not drive for long hours in a stretch.

Driving in an unsafe and irresponsible manner is not cool and you are putting many lives at risk. You should always follow the traffic rules no matter what. Your loved ones want you to reach early but not while putting your own life at risk. So be safe.
