In this essay we are going to talk about the water conservation. When one thinks about the fundamental necessities required to ensure human survival, water comes very early on in the list along with other things like food and oxygen. Survival without water is impossible. Every organism on the planet needs water to complete their metabolism be it animals, plants or microorganism. In fact the origin of life itself took place is water.

Water is one of the major components that helped in the origin of life on this planet. And it is also the one that helps maintain life on this planet. Seventy percent of earth’s total surface area is covered with water and also seventy percent of human body is made up of water. Out of this seventy percent water with which our planet is covered about 97% is salt water which cannot be used by human being for there consumption and only about three percent of the water on earth is fresh water and drinkable, from this three percent of fresh drinkable water 2 percent is in the form of ice glaciers and is frozen which leaves us with only one percent of freshwater that is actually available to us for drinking.

Despite this some people fail to acknowledge the importance and value of water and often misuse it and take it for granted, due to this attitude of human population we have polluted the major water bodies of the planet which has resulted in a overall degradation in the quality of clean drinking water. Clean drinking water is a basic human right and everyone on the planet has equal rights over it. Everyone deserves to get clean drinking water, yet in many places in the world, people do not get access to clean drinking water and this is no one else’s fault but our own. There are several reasons for contamination of water like climate change and industrial discharge, most of these reasons are human made and happen due to the pollution caused by human.

This degradation in the quality of clean drinking water has affected million of humans all over the world. Drinking unclean water can result in several diseases and health hazards like cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. An increase in these diseases can lead to health crisis which can affect the whole world. Contamination of water bodies not only affects human beings but other organisms too for example the marine organism which live in the ocean any contamination in the sea can lead to their death which will disturb the whole aquatic ecosystem and can even lead to extinction of certain organisms. In order to prevent such things we need to take crucial steps as soon as possible. One such step in the direction of protecting the quality of freshwater available for drinking is water conservation.

Water conservation is the act of making policies and strategies and implementing them in order to protect the quality of fresh drinking water available for drinking and stopping its further degradation. It is done with regards to developing sustainably so that we can ensure the that good quality clean drinking water is available for humans not only for this generation but also for future generations. Water conservation takes care of aspects, quality and quantity; it is about applying all the possible preventive measures to prevent scarcity of water. Water is a necessary component of human life it is not only required for drinking purposes but also for cleaning, cooking etc. Water conservation is our duty since the contamination was also caused due to our recklessness.

Water conservation can be done in multiple ways. There are many steps we can take in order to conserve water like-

  1. Preventing industries to discharge untreated chemical waste into water; chemical waste when goes into water bodies untreated can cause a lot of damage to the aquatic life and can also result in the deat of aquatic organisms.
  2. By using modern irrigation methods; it is often seen in the traditional method of irrigation a lot of water is water and also gets contaminated by fertilizers this problem can be solved with the help of modern irrigation methods.
  3. Rain water harvesting; we can build tanks and small lakes in our homes and gardens to collect rain water and use it for personal use in this way we can save water.
  4. Using water wisely and judiciously in homes; we can save a lot of water by using it wisel for example by turning off the tap while brushing and getting the leaking taps and pipes repaired.
  5. Not polluting water bodies; we should stop people from throwing trash into water bodies as it disturbs the aquatic life and also degrades the quality of drinking water for humans and makes the water unfit for human consumption.

At last i would like to say that the contamination and scarcity of water that many people across the globe are facing is because of our recklessness so it is our duty to stop the water bodies from any further degradation and also trying to restore the damage that has already been done.
