How does it work? How is the media’s scenario today? Let’s take a look at these points!

Short Essay on media

If explained in simple terms, it won’t be wrong to say that media is a way of communication to receive or supply information. It doesn’t have a particular form. It could be broadcasted as news on television, published as headlines in newspapers and uploaded as articles on the internet. It holds a huge amount of significance for the people as it has been a mode of collecting and gathering information for a long time. It has developed from a one-hour news broadcast on television to several news channels showcasing its content 24/7.

It has developed from inked papers of news to virtually represented newspapers. Thanks to modernisation, today a person has information about every current affair on their fingertips. Their significance still stands strong and may even increase with the rapid changes taking place in the world! However, have you ever wondered what it would feel like if there were no media around?

What would happen if there were no media?

We agreed that the media is a very important source for garnering knowledge. But what harm would have come if we didn’t have this source? Let’s look into some points that would arrive if there were no media!

People would stay unaware

Imagine there is a war going around in your neighbourhood and you wouldn’t even get a hint about it! This will exactly be the condition of people if they get isolated from the media. Nobody will have any idea of what’s happening in places that are out of their eye reach! Similarly, even other people would be unaware of anything that happens to you!

Lack of knowledge on new amendments

Imagine the situation of demonetisation occurring in India and there is no media. How do you think people would have realized this change?  Even if they hear it from someone else, they don’t have any proof to cross-check it! The media plays a communication bridge between such actions and people. We can get to know about several changes and rule implementations of our country as well as other parts of the world.

No promotions and advertisement

Media is seen as a very good source for promoting events and products. Over the years, many companies, governments and organizations have made use of these platforms to promote their events or products. Without media, it would be hard to catch the public’s eye especially if you are promoting in a big country with a huge population like India.

Lack of knowledge on offers

What do you do if you want to look for jobs? Or some sale? You look into your nearby newspaper or would probably research a bit about the company you want to apply for. However, this wouldn’t have been so easy if there were no media! You often find yourself becoming dependent on these sources when it comes to looking for such offers and ads. Hence, it won’t be wrong to say that the disappearance of the media might make things a bit hard for people!

Lacking in appreciation or achievement

Imagine if you top a national level exam, your parents will proudly showcase your new article to all the nearby people. People find a sense of pride when their good deeds are highlighted in the media as they will be noticed and appreciated by the people. Now imagine in a situation where there is no source of media available, you might never know of the achievements people or the countries have received!

No source of confirming a rumour

Some news are simply not that easy to digest. Imagine if you heard about your favourite actor being hospitalized, it might be something you won’t believe in and would probably look out for proof and evidence in newspapers, television or the internet. If this situation would have occurred in a world where there is no media, you wouldn’t have had any solid source which can provide you with what exactly happened!

No entertainment

Apart from knowledge, media also serves as a great source of entertainment. With the developing world, the modes and the sources of entertainment have also modernised. Today there are various ways and modes of entertainment for one to enjoy in their free time and it is all thanks to the media.

No connection!

With the rise of more unique and amazing media platforms, the world has really become a small place. Using media platforms like social media, it has become a lot more easier for people to connect with anyone, anywhere. Recently, with the invasion of the Taliban in Afghanistan, many people actually used the social media network to contact people of the world and ask for help from them which would have been nearly impossible if there was no such form of media.

Not just that, it would also have been much easier to hide a crime if there was no one to point it out by newspapers and other forms of media.

Exaggeration of an incident!

When information passes from one person to another verbally, there is a high chance of the whole plot becoming misleading. This is because many people may tend to add some spices to their story making it more crisp and interesting. They may also leave some facts about it. Hence, even a small incident may ultimately become an exaggerated one. Media like newspapers tend to provide us with a logical story with accurate evidence and factual reasoning which makes it much more superior than other people’s stories.

Protection!

Having the media gives a sense of protection! How do you ask? Well, the media will inform you about the negative happenings in the world and may even provide you with measures. For example, if a state is facing a flood situation, its updates will be constantly given by the media so that it can reach the people in higher positions.

Present scenario of media

Though the media holds such strong significance, over the years, its perception and reputation have worsened! Many dark sides of this industry have come to the front. The hypocrisy and efficiency of the media, especially Indian media, is often brutally challenged. There are some of the reasons why that is happening-

Fake advertising of products

There is no doubt that over the years, media has become a strong tool for marketing. It often becomes a platform to promote various businesses. However, you cannot guarantee that every product is worth your trust or not. Over the years, we have seen several products spreading false ideas and perceptions in the name of advertising which is definitely not a good thing for people who watch it and get influenced by it.

Highlighting the baseless news leaving behind the necessary ones

This is probably one of the worst things a media house can do. When we talk about media channels and newspapers, we often expect them to present the necessary news with an unbiased opinion. However, over the years, these media houses may get all hungry over their ratings and try to focus on the news which might interest people more, no matter how baseless it is. That’s why, probably, nowadays a celebrity scandal is more often seen in a headline than an educating event or incident.

The condition can be even worse when these media sources blatantly support one side rather than giving unbiased content based on their research and facts.

Useless debates

Debate is a very strong medium of putting two contradictory points with valid reasoning. However, in some countries like India, it seems more like a war zone! The debates look more like a publicity stunt rather than educating the masses about the topic.

Influence in relationship and health

Till now we majorly focused on news media. However, there is another media which has its own contribution of cons in a person’s life. That media is none other than social media. Within a few years, digital media has exploded crazily. Though it mainly focuses on connecting far people, it may somewhere be lacking in bringing close ones closer. People are becoming more and more isolated from the people around them. They tend to spend hours wasting their time scrolling through their gadgets rather than doing something productive. It is neither good for mental health nor for physical health too!

Conclusion

In today’s time, media has become an extensive medium of communication. People don’t have to research a lot or even struggle to collect information, they have everything at their fingertips. The media has seen tremendous growth in the past few years. Now, there are many forms of media that are easy as well as convenient to use. However, just like everything has its own pros and cons, the media has certain dark sides too. We need to be aware of it, so that we don’t slip into its addiction! Beware of how much time you are spending with them and try to use these sources to your advantage.
